Mumbai's BMC Plans Desalination Plant with New Model
Mumbai's municipal body, BMC, is planning to build a desalination plant to turn seawater into drinking water.
They're trying again, having changed how they ask companies to bid for the project.
The new plan will take water from far out in the ocean, and the design, construction, and operation will all be handled by the winning bidder.
This follows an earlier plan with an Israeli company that didn't work out, so the city is trying a different approach to attract more companies.
The goal is to reduce Mumbai's reliance on rainfall for its water supply.
BMC is re-tendering a 200 MLD desalination plant at Manori, Mumbai.
The plant will draw water from 2.5 km into the sea.
BMC has adopted a Design, Build, and Operate (DBO) model.
The previous tendering used a Swiss Challenge mode.
