NITI Aayog Outlines Roadmap for Self-Sufficiency in Pulses
India is the world's biggest consumer and producer of pulses, which are like beans and lentils.
The government wants to make sure India can grow enough of its own to eat and to help farmers.
The NITI Aayog made a plan to reach this goal.
They plan to launch a six-year mission.
The government also keeps a stock of pulses to make sure there are enough and the prices stay stable.
Right now, they're letting people bring in more beans and lentils without paying extra taxes.
Last year, India grew a lot of pulses, but not quite as much as they hoped.
They also bought a lot of pulses from other countries, while also selling some to other countries.
NITI Aayog released a report on strategies to boost pulse production in India.
India is the largest producer and consumer of pulses globally.
The government is launching a ‘Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses’ to focus on certain types of pulses.
The government maintains a buffer stock of pulses and allows duty-free imports to stabilize prices and availability.
India's pulse production in 2023-24 was lower than the target, necessitating imports.
