India's Adolescent Nutrition Crisis Starts Long Before Pregnancy

India's Adolescent Nutrition Crisis Starts Long Before Pregnancy

Many girls in India do not get enough nutritious food before they become pregnant.

Their health can be affected by poverty and how food is shared at home.

Some girls leave school early or marry when they are young.

They may also have little control over when they become pregnant.

Social rules and limited freedom can make it harder to reach health services.

Women and girls may eat after everyone else and receive less food.

This can create several problems at the same time.

Nutrition programmes should support girls for who they are now, as well as for their possible future role as mothers.
