NSE to Reduce Lot Sizes for Key Index Derivatives
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) in India is making some changes to how people can trade certain types of investments called index derivatives.
Starting in January 2026, the number of shares or units you need to buy or sell in one go (called the lot size) for some popular indexes like Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank will be reduced.
This means it might cost less money to trade these investments, which could be good news for smaller investors.
The changes will start after the December 2025 contracts expire, and the NSE has planned the transition to make sure everything goes smoothly.
However, some people in the market have said that these frequent changes can be a bit confusing and make things more complicated.
NSE will reduce lot sizes for several major index derivatives starting January 2026.
Lot sizes for Nifty 50, Nifty Bank, Nifty Financial Services, and Nifty Midcap Select will be reduced.
The changes aim to keep contract values within the ₹10–15 lakh band as prescribed by the markets regulator.
Existing lot sizes will remain applicable until the December 2025 expiry.
The revision is expected to lower the margin outlay for retail traders, making index futures and options more affordable.
