NSE to Launch Electronic Gold Receipts Trading
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) in India is planning to start trading something called Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs).
These are like digital receipts for physical gold that you can keep in a special account.
The NSE's boss, Ashish Chauhan, said this will make it easier and more efficient to own and trade gold.
They've been working on this since 2022, but there are some tax rules that make it a bit complicated.
The NSE is also working on other things like trading electricity, helping small businesses raise money, and making it easier to trade bonds.
They've already started some of these things, but not all of them are very popular yet.
NSE plans to introduce trading in Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs) to dematerialize gold.
EGRs are digital receipts for physical gold, stored in demat accounts.
Challenges include complexities with Goods and Services Tax (GST).
NSE has also made progress in electricity futures, Social Stock Exchange, and SME IPOs.
Other initiatives include T+0 settlement and corporate/government bond index futures.
