Mumbai’s Proposed Cinema Tax Could Push Ticket Prices Higher

Mumbai’s Proposed Cinema Tax Could Push Ticket Prices Higher

Mumbai’s city corporation has proposed a much higher tax on movie shows.

The tax would rise from ₹60 to ₹400 for each screening.

It is charged per show, not for each ticket sold.

So a nearly empty show would still owe the same tax as a full one.

Some cinema operators think they may raise ticket prices by ₹5 to ₹10.

That is an estimate, not a confirmed price change.

The higher tax could also leave less money for theatres and film distributors to share.

The proposal has not yet taken effect.
