Navi Pillay Wins 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for Promoting International Law

Navi Pillay is a South African lawyer and judge whose family has Indian Tamil roots.

She grew up during apartheid, a system that discriminated against non-white people in South Africa.

Early in her career, she defended Nelson Mandela and others who stood against apartheid.

She later worked as a judge in important international cases.

One article says she helped establish that rape and sexual violence could be acts of genocide under international law.

From 2008 to 2014, she was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The Nobel Committee gave her the 2026 Peace Prize for promoting peace and international law.

It said her work defending people and serving in international courts connected the different stages of her career.
