Government, Meta outline measures to curb deepfakes and CSAM

The government of India and a big technology company called Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, had important meetings this week.

They talked about special videos made by computers that can trick people, called deepfakes.

They also talked about harmful pictures and videos that hurt children, and about computer-made content that is not labelled as fake.

Meta told the government about its plans to fix these problems, and said it is working hard on them.

The government asked Meta to have more people check content and to better understand different Indian languages and local culture.

The meetings started because Meta's computer system accidentally removed a video posted by India's leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meta said sorry and put the video back.

The government says it does not want to stop free speech, but wants Meta to follow Indian laws.

The two sides will meet again next week.
