Peru Jails Ex-President Castillo for Rebellion
A former president of Peru named Pedro Castillo was sentenced to 11.5 years in prison.
This is because he tried to close the country's Congress and take more power for himself, which is against the law.
The court decided he was guilty of rebellion and conspiring against the state.
This happened after another former president, Martin Vizcarra, was also sentenced to prison for taking bribes before he became president.
Both cases show that Peru has been having some problems with its leaders following the rules.
Castillo said he was just reading a document, but the courts didn't agree.
Many people protested when he was removed from office, and some were hurt or killed.
Peru has had many presidents in recent years, and several have gone to jail.
Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo sentenced to 11.5 years in prison for rebellion and conspiracy against the state.
Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress and assume broad powers at the end of 2022, triggering violent protests.
The sentencing occurred a day after another former president, Martin Vizcarra, was sentenced to 14 years for bribery.
Castillo rejected the rebellion charges, claiming he merely read a document without consequence.
Prosecutors had requested a 34-year prison sentence for Castillo, and Peru has jailed five former presidents in recent years.
