Tamil Nadu Forms Committee to Fix Revenue Gap
Tamil Nadu is a fast‑growing state in India, but its money from taxes has not grown as fast as its economy.
To fix this, the state has set up a special committee led by Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
The committee will look at how taxes are collected, find new ways to raise money, and make sure the state spends money wisely.
Experts say the problem is not just about raising more taxes but also about making sure the money that is collected is used well and that people pay what they owe.
The committee will also check if the state can get more money from things like public utilities and better use technology to reduce corruption.
Tamil Nadu’s own‑tax revenue fell from 5.93% of GDP in 2021‑22 to 5.45% in 2025‑26.
The state has created a Revenue Augmentation Committee chaired by former Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
The committee’s mandate includes improving tax administration, identifying new tax and non‑tax revenue sources, and recommending reforms in excise, registration, mining, commercial taxes, motor vehicle taxes, liquor, and public assets.
Experts say the revenue gap is structural, caused by administrative inefficiencies, corruption, weak enforcement, and failure to capture fast‑growing sectors.
The committee also must examine expenditure efficiency, non‑tax revenues, and the role of technology and governance reforms in reducing leakages.
