Uber Diversifies Fleet Partners in India
Uber in India is making a big change.
Until now, they mostly worked with one company, Everest Fleet, to provide cars for their ride-hailing service.
But now, Uber is also investing in another company called Carrum.
This is because there aren't enough cars to meet the growing demand for rides, especially in big cities.
Carrum has about 3,000 electric and CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles, which is different from Everest Fleet's focus on electric vehicles.
By working with both companies, Uber hopes to have more cars available, reduce wait times, and keep their service running smoothly.
This change might also help drivers by providing more vehicles and steadier work, but it could also mean stricter performance expectations.
Uber India is diversifying its fleet partners by investing $7 million in Carrum, in addition to its existing partnership with Everest Fleet.
The move aims to address fleet supply shortages and reduce concentration risk as ride demand surges by 25% in 2025.
Carrum focuses on CNG and premium categories, complementing Everest Fleet's mass-market EV deployment.
The investment in Carrum helps Uber hedge against EV charging gaps and policy uncertainty, ensuring fleet uptime.
The shift to a multi-partner ecosystem may subtly shift bargaining power back to Uber, impacting pricing, service levels, and expansion priorities.
