India Blocks Football Teams From 2026 Asian Games
India’s football teams worked toward playing at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
The men’s team and women’s team had qualified for important Asian football competitions.
However, the Indian government has a rule that teams must rank among Asia’s top eight to receive approval and funding for the Asian Games.
India’s men rank 26th in Asia, while the women rank 13th.
Because neither team met the rule, they were not selected.
The government says the Asian Games should focus on athletes who have a strong chance of winning medals.
Football clubs also do not always have to release players for this tournament.
This means India’s teams could not guarantee their strongest squads, even after months of preparation.
India’s men’s under-23 and women’s senior football teams will not compete at the 2026 Asian Games.
A September 2025 government directive requires team sports seeking clearance to rank among Asia’s top eight.
India’s men rank 26th and women 13th in Asia, below the eligibility threshold.
The government said the policy aims to prioritize medal contenders and avoid publicly funded exposure trips.
Club reluctance to release players, limited football funding and federation governance disputes also affect India’s competitiveness.

Eligibility and public spending
Government and Efficiency Argument
The government says Asian Games participation should be limited to teams with a realistic chance of winning medals, rather than treating the event as an exposure trip.
Football Development and Representation Argument
Football officials and players’ supporters can argue that teams need high-level Asian competition to gain experience and improve, especially after completing qualification and preparation programs.
Club player release
Government and Efficiency Argument
Officials point to Indian Super League clubs’ reluctance to release players for a tournament outside the FIFA international calendar as a reason not to grant an exemption.
Football Development and Representation Argument
The football side says the club-versus-country conflict should be solved through release clauses and coordinated scheduling, rather than excluding national teams.
Short-term selection versus long-term development
Government and Efficiency Argument
The top-eight rule concentrates limited public funding on teams expected to deliver medals and keeps the overall Asian Games contingent capped at 600 athletes.
Football Development and Representation Argument
Football advocates contend that limited grassroots and lower-division funding, including Rs 86 lakh for I-League 3, makes it harder to build the player depth needed to reach Asia’s top eight.
