Telangana Institute Develops Treatment for Diabetic Foot Ulcers
Some people with diabetes get big sores on their feet called diabetic foot ulcers.
These sores are hard to heal and can get infected.
In very bad cases, a person might even lose a foot.
Scientists in India worked hard to make a new medicine to help.
They made it from a plant called Gymnema sylvestre.
The medicine helps these foot sores heal better.
A medicine must pass many tests before it can be given to people.
The scientists finished the safe lab tests on the medicine.
Now a company called Viridis Biopharma will test the medicine on patients.
If the tests go well, the medicine may help many people in India and around the world.
CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad, has developed an IND-ready phytopharmaceutical from Gymnema sylvestre to treat diabetic foot ulcers.
The institute signed a technology transfer agreement with Viridis Biopharma Pvt. Ltd. to take the formulation into clinical trials.
Around 20 per cent of people with diabetes develop foot ulcers, and no specific medicine is currently available for them.
The technology completed pre-clinical development and has patent protection in India and other jurisdictions.
Viridis Biopharma will pursue regulatory submissions to the CDSCO and US FDA, with possible applications in other chronic wounds and inflammatory skin disorders.
