Aluminium Prices Tumble to Two-Week Low Amidst Market Sell-off
Imagine a store where people buy and sell metal like aluminium.
On Thursday, the price of aluminium went down to its lowest in two weeks.
This happened because the stock market, where people buy shares in companies, also went down.
When the stock market is shaky, people get nervous about buying other things like metals.
Even though China, a big buyer of aluminium, is showing good demand and its market is getting tighter, the overall nervousness in the markets made prices drop.
Earlier in the week, the price had been high because people thought there wouldn't be enough aluminium.
But the bad mood in the stock market made traders sell off their aluminium, pushing the price down.
Aluminium prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) hit a two-week low of $2,838.50 per metric ton, down 0.4%.
The decline was driven by a sell-off in the equities market, particularly technology stocks, impacting base metal sentiment.
Improved demand prospects in China and tightening market conditions provided some support but were outweighed by broader market fears.
Investor sentiment was also affected by the U.S. government shutdown and anticipation of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision.
The European aluminium premium rose significantly, reaching its highest point since February, driven by reduced Canadian metal supply and expected carbon border adjustment mechanism costs.
