Mixed Market Trends Start 2026
On the first trading day of 2026, the Indian rupee fell by 11 paise to 89.99 against the US dollar.
This happened because of money flowing out of the country and uncertainty in the global market.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is watching the situation and is ready to step in if needed.
Meanwhile, the stock market started the year positively, with the Sensex climbing over 200 points and the Nifty gaining as well.
Silver prices remained flat, while gold prices saw some profit booking.
The overall market trends show a mix of positive and negative movements.
In 2025, the Indian stock market had its worst underperformance in Asia in nearly three decades, but it also posted a record 10th straight year of gains.
Brokerages are predicting a rally of 10-26% for the Sensex and Nifty in 2026, driven by factors like GST rationalisation, rate cuts, and infrastructure spending.
The rupee opened at 89.94 and fell to 89.99 against the US dollar, a depreciation of 11 paise from the previous day's close of 89.88.
The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 223.54 points to 85,444.14, and the 50-share NSE Nifty went up by 65.75 points to 26,195.35 in early trade.
Silver prices remained flat on MCX after a record run in 2025, while gold prices eased slightly due to profit booking.
The fall in the rupee is attributed to persistent foreign fund outflows and global uncertainty, while the stock market's positive start is supported by steady DII inflows and strong gains in blue-chip stocks.
The RBI, under Governor Sanjay Malhotra, is monitoring the situation and will intervene if necessary, while India's strong macroeconomic parameters and ample forex reserves provide stability.
