Global Refugee Resettlement Access Shrinks Amid Rising Needs
The UN says that around 2.5 million refugees worldwide will need help to move to new homes in 2026.
This is a bit less than the 2.9 million who needed help in the past.
Some refugees are now choosing to go back to Syria.
But, it's getting harder for refugees to find new homes because countries like the US are taking in fewer refugees.
The UN wants countries to keep helping refugees find new homes.
Last year, the UN helped resettle 116,000 refugees, but they hope to resettle 120,000 in 2026.
UNHCR estimates 2.5 million refugees will need resettlement in 2026.
Resettlement needs are down slightly from 2.9 million in 2024.
Reduced resettlement access is due to some refugees returning to Syria.
The US, and other countries, are reducing or adjusting resettlement quotas.
UNHCR urges countries to sustain and increase resettlement programs.
