Russian envoy says US seeks to contain India's rise

Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov says the United States may try to limit India’s rise as a powerful country.

He pointed to a comment that the United States would not let India become another China.

Alipov called that comment a public mistake, or “Freudian slip.”

He also said a new US sanctions law could pressure countries that buy Russian oil and gas.

The law could allow tariffs as high as 100 percent.

India buys Russian crude and says it does so to protect its economy and energy supply.

India has warned that the law could hurt its relationship with the United States and global markets.

The United States’ reported policy focus is pressuring Russia, while Alipov views the measure as part of a broader effort to contain India.
