India’s air force has fewer fighter squadrons as older planes are retired.

Its chief, AP Singh, warned that delays in getting replacement aircraft could make the gap worse.

He said the force needs replacements at a pace equivalent to almost two squadrons each year just to stop the decline.

New aircraft programmes, including Tejas models and a planned multi-role fighter purchase, are expected to help.

Singh said India could consider other choices for a stealth fighter if the AMCA programme is delayed, but no decision has been made.

He also said drones should be used as part of the air force rather than by a separate drone force.

He described drones as useful but not a revolution for the service.

The briefing also covered India’s disaster-relief work and an international air exercise.
