US Travel Ban Exempts Athletes for Major Sports Events
The U.S. government has made a special rule that allows athletes, coaches, and their support teams from certain countries to enter the U.S. for big sports events, even though those countries are normally restricted from traveling to the U.S. This rule applies to events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
However, regular fans, reporters, and sponsors from those countries still can't come to the U.S. unless they qualify for another special exception.
The U.S. wants to make sure these big sports events happen without problems, even while they have strict travel rules for other visitors.
The U.S. travel ban exempts athletes, coaches, and support staff from 39 countries and the Palestinian Authority for major sporting events.
Exempted events include the 2026 FIFA World Cup, 2028 Olympics, Paralympics, and other major competitions.
Fans, spectators, media, and corporate sponsors from the same countries remain barred unless they qualify under a separate exemption.
The exemption covers events hosted or endorsed by organizations like FIFA, the International Military Sports Council, and major U.S. professional leagues.
The move aims to avoid disruptions to high-profile international sporting events in the U.S. while maintaining strict travel restrictions.
