Seven Candidates Vie to Replace Guterres as UN Chief

Seven Candidates Vie to Replace Guterres as UN Chief

António Guterres is finishing his second term as the United Nations secretary-general.

He is expected to leave the job on December 31.

Seven people are competing to replace him.

They come from several countries, including Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Senegal and Uganda.

The Security Council is studying the candidates through secret, informal votes.

These votes show which candidates members like or dislike, but they do not decide the winner by themselves.

The five permanent Council members can block a candidate with a veto.

After the Council recommends someone, the General Assembly, which has 193 members, formally appoints that person.

The new secretary-general is scheduled to start on January 1, 2027.
