MNF candidate wins Mizoram Dampa by-election, retains opposition post
In a special election for the Dampa assembly seat in Mizoram, the Mizo National Front (MNF) party has won, thanks to hard work and dedication from their supporters.
Their candidate, Dr. R. Lalthangliana, received more votes than the candidate from the ruling party, Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), winning by a difference of 562 votes.
Many people voted, with over 83% of eligible voters participating in the election held on November 11.
The MNF's victory is important because it helps them keep their position as the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly.
Dr. Lalthangliana, a 69-year-old teacher and politician with previous experience as an MLA and cabinet minister, credited his win to the party's efforts, his connections with the Dampa people, and his experience.
Other parties like Congress, BJP, and People's Conference also had candidates running, but they received fewer votes.
MNF candidate Dr R Lalthangliana won the Dampa Assembly seat by-election, defeating ruling ZPM nominee Vanlalsailova by 562 votes.
Lalthangliana secured 6,981 votes (40.23%), while Vanlalsailova received 6,419 votes (36.61%).
The by-election saw a voter turnout of 83.07% among the 20,888 eligible voters.
The MNF's victory allows them to retain the post of Leader of Opposition in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly, increasing their strength to 10 MLAs.
MNF president Zoramthanga attributed the win to collective efforts and dedication of party workers, while Lalthangliana cited his political experience and close association with the constituency.
