Karnataka is facing a serious drought, which means there has not been enough water for crops and rural communities.

The state says 177 areas called taluks are affected.

Officials are checking 40 more taluks, so the number could rise above 220.

The government estimates that crops worth Rs 46,324.5 crore have been damaged.

Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara wrote to two Union ministers asking for help.

The state had earlier requested Rs 3,705.30 crore for 101 affected taluks.

A newer assessment found damage to agricultural crops across 26.08 lakh hectares.

It also found damage to horticultural crops across 1.49 lakh hectares.
