Uttarakhand High Court seeks GPS tracking in mining vehicles
The Uttarakhand High Court is upset because many mining trucks in Bageshwar district don't have GPS tracking, which makes it hard to stop illegal mining.
The court told the government to find a way to add GPS to these trucks and send a report by January 13, 2026.
The court said that without GPS and connected systems, it's hard to control illegal mining.
They also noticed that some trucks without GPS are still being used, and the rules aren't being followed properly.
The court wants all systems, like the e-Rawanna portal and weighbridges, to be connected and use GPS to track the trucks better.
They also found that the time allowed for transportation on the same route is different, which is confusing and needs to be fixed.
The Uttarakhand High Court directed state officials to find a technological solution for GPS tracking in mining transport vehicles by January 13, 2026.
The court noted that vehicles without GPS are still being used for transporting minerals, despite the rules requiring GPS-enabled vehicles.
The bench emphasized that all three systems—e-Rawanna portal, weighbridges, and transport vehicles—must be interconnected and GPS-enabled to curb illegal transportation effectively.
The court observed discrepancies in the time granted for transportation through e-Rawannas for the same distance, ranging from one hour to five hours or more.
Advocate Dushyant Mainali, amicus curiae, had earlier submitted a report recommending GPS enabling of vehicles used to move mined material.
