Norway’s King Harald V Dies at 89; Modi Offers Condolences

Norway’s King Harald V died peacefully at age 89.

The Royal House of Norway said he died at a hospital in Oslo on Friday, August 28, 2026.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent condolences to Harald’s family and the people of Norway.

Modi remembered meeting Harald during his visit to Norway in May.

He said the king was warm and deeply committed to serving Norway.

Harald became king in 1991 after his father died.

He had recently received treatment for anemia, fluid buildup, and a bacterial infection.

Norway’s rules say Crown Prince Haakon became king immediately after Harald’s death.

Some reports called him King Haakon VIII, while the Royal House said his official regnal name had not yet been announced.
