World Court to hear Myanmar genocide case in January
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will soon hear a big case about whether Myanmar, a country in Asia, did something very bad called genocide against a group of Muslim people called the Rohingya.
Gambia, a country in Africa, is bringing this case to the court with help from a group of Muslim countries.
The hearings will happen in January 2025.
Myanmar says they didn't do anything wrong, but Gambia and others say Myanmar's army hurt and forced many Rohingya people to leave their homes.
The court will listen to both sides and decide if Myanmar is guilty of genocide.
This is a very important case because it could set rules for future cases about genocide.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will hear a genocide case against Myanmar from January 12-29, 2025.
Gambia, backed by the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation, filed the case in 2019, accusing Myanmar of genocide against the Rohingya.
Myanmar has denied the allegations and will present its defense from January 16-20, 2025.
The ICJ has allocated three closed-door days for witness hearings.
A U.N. mission concluded that Myanmar's 2017 campaign against the Rohingya included 'genocidal acts', displacing 730,000 Rohingya into Bangladesh.
