Surat demolishes encroachments, evicts 250 after drug allegations
In Surat, India, the city government and police removed illegal buildings and tents under a big bridge called the Varachha flyover.
They did this because a local politician, Kishor Kanani, wrote a letter saying people were selling and using drugs there.
Before that, a video showed a young boy selling marijuana under the bridge, which went viral on social media.
The authorities removed the illegal structures and evicted more than 250 people who were living in tents there.
They used 10 big trucks to clear the area.
The politician had asked for a permanent solution to the problem, and the city officials said they would make sure the area stays free of illegal buildings in the future.
Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) demolished illegal structures under the Varachha flyover and evicted over 250 people.
The action was taken in response to a letter by BJP MLA Kishor Kanani alleging illegal drug activities and encroachments.
A viral video showed a minor boy selling ganja under the flyover, drawing public attention to the issue.
The encroachments covered a 7-kilometre area from Suryapur railway culvert to Sarthana check post.
SMC officials, along with Surat police, removed the encroachments and loaded them onto 10 trucks.
