AP Speaker Proposes No Work, No Pay
The speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu, is worried because some members of the legislature (MLAs) are not showing up for work but still getting paid.
He thinks this is unfair and wants to change the rules so that if MLAs don't attend sessions, they shouldn't get their salaries.
He also suggested that the public should have the right to remove these representatives.
He talked about this at a meeting with speakers from other states.
He said that when legislators don't do their job, it makes people lose trust in the government.
He wants the legislature to work at least 60 days a year to make sure things get done properly.
Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu called for a 'No Work, No Pay' principle for absentee legislators.
He suggested empowering citizens with a 'Right to Recall' to remove non-performing representatives if accountability measures fail.
Some MLAs in Andhra Pradesh have not attended sessions since the June 2024 elections, continuing to draw salaries and perks.
Ayyanna Patrudu expressed concern over the decline in legislative working days, advocating for at least 60 days a year.
He urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to provide guidance and initiate reforms to address absenteeism.
