China’s Hypersonic Weapons Could Threaten Aircraft Near US Bases

China has reportedly developed very fast weapons that could attack important airplanes from far away.

These weapons are called hypersonic glide vehicles because they travel through the atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound.

They can change direction, which may make them harder to stop.

Possible targets include planes that refuel fighter jets and planes that help organize military operations.

A vehicle launched by a DF-17 missile could travel about 1,500 miles.

A DF-27 could reportedly travel about 5,000 miles, potentially reaching Hawaii.

However, hitting a moving plane from that distance would require extremely accurate information.

A missile launch could also be mistaken for a nuclear attack, creating a dangerous risk of escalation.
