South Korea Enacts World's First AI Laws

South Korea has just put in place the world's first big set of rules for artificial intelligence (AI).

These rules, called the AI Basic Act, aim to make sure AI is used safely and responsibly.

The laws say that companies must have a person checking on important AI systems, like those used in healthcare or finance.

They also need to tell people when they're using AI that creates things, like pictures or text.

The government says this will help South Korea become a leader in AI.

However, some small companies are worried because the rules might be hard to follow, and they're not sure about all the details.

The government will give companies at least a year to get used to the new rules before they start giving out fines.

The biggest fine could be up to 30 million won, which is about $20,400.

Other countries, like the U.S. and China, are also trying to figure out how to regulate AI, but South Korea is the first to have such a complete set of rules.
