Allahabad HC Slams UP DGP's CCTV Storage Order
The Allahabad High Court has scolded the Uttar Pradesh police chief for an order that says police stations should keep CCTV footage for only two and a half months.
The Supreme Court had earlier said that this footage should be kept for 18 months.
The court is upset because a woman said she was treated badly by the police and wanted the CCTV footage to prove it.
But the police said they couldn't give the footage because of the DGP's order.
The court has now asked the state's top official to explain why this happened and has scheduled the next hearing for January 29, 2026.
The Allahabad High Court has held the UP DGP's order on CCTV storage in contempt of a Supreme Court order.
The DGP's order directed police stations to retain CCTV footage for a maximum of two-and-a-half months, contrary to the Supreme Court's directive of 18 months.
The court has asked the UP Chief Secretary to file a personal affidavit explaining the anomalies noticed by the court.
The petitioner, a woman, alleged illegal detention, custodial assault, sexual harassment, extortion, and false implication by the police.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for January 29, 2026, and directed that the personal affidavit be filed within three weeks.
