Stroke Cases Nearly Double Among Young U.S. Adults

A study looked at strokes in people aged 20 to 54 in the Greater Cincinnati area.

It examined six periods between 1993 and 2020.

The study found that strokes in younger adults became much more common.

Most of the increase came from ischemic strokes, which happen when blood flow to the brain is blocked.

Health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes were more common among people who had strokes.

The good news is that fewer young adults died within 30 days after having a stroke.

However, more survivors may live with long-term effects.

Researchers say that finding and treating stroke risks early may help reverse the trend.
