Tax Filing Discrepancies Can Trigger Notices After E-Verification
When you file your taxes in India, you have to sign off on the return electronically.
Even after you do that, the tax office can still send you a notice if something in your return doesn’t match the records they have.
If you find a mistake, you can file a revised return, and that doesn’t make the tax office more likely to audit you.
It’s a good idea to double‑check your income and deductions against the documents the tax office has, like the Annual Information Statement and Form 26AS, before the July 31 deadline.
If you need to fix something, you can do it until December 31, 2026.
E‑verification of an ITR does not guarantee no notice.
Mismatches between ITR and AIS, Form 26AS, or TIS may prompt a notice if significant.
Filing a revised return or claiming a refund does not automatically increase audit risk.
Taxpayers should recheck AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS after filing and before the July 31 deadline.
Revised returns can be filed up to December 31, 2026 to correct errors.
