Pune Institute Develops India's First State-Run Goat Pox Vaccine
The Institute of Veterinary Biological Products (IVBP) in Pune, India, has created a new vaccine for Goat Pox, a very contagious disease that affects goats and can cause high rates of sickness and death.
This is the first time a government facility in India has made this kind of vaccine.
The vaccine is based on Vero cells and was developed with help from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Indian Veterinary Research Institute (ICAR-IVRI).
The IVBP plans to produce about 1.15 crore doses and is waiting for a license from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI).
The vaccine will help farmers in Maharashtra, where there are about 1.28 crore sheep and goats, protect their animals from this disease.
The IVBP also has a license to produce another vaccine, Lumpi-ProVac, for Lumpy Skin Disease in cattle, which is similar to the Goat Pox vaccine.
The production process involves growing the vaccine virus in special cell cultures and ensuring it is safe and effective.
IVBP in Pune develops India's first state-run Goat Pox vaccine.
Vaccine is live attenuated and based on Vero cells, developed with ICAR-IVRI.
Initial production planned for 1.15 crore doses, awaiting DCGI license.
Goat Pox is highly contagious with up to 100% morbidity and 80-100% mortality in young animals.
IVBP also licensed to produce Lumpi-ProVac for Lumpy Skin Disease in cattle.
