Maharashtra Expands Lokayukta Jurisdiction with Amendment
The Maharashtra government has made a change to a law called the Lokayukta Act.
This change means that more government officials, especially those appointed to boards and committees by the state under central laws, will now be under the watch of the Lokayukta.
The Lokayukta is like a watchdog that makes sure these officials do their jobs properly.
The change was made to clear up any confusion about who the Lokayukta can investigate.
The law also updates some old references to new laws.
This change was approved quickly and easily by the government without much discussion.
The Chief Minister said the changes were made based on suggestions from the President’s office and do not need further approval.
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly passed an amendment to the Maharashtra Lokayukta Act, 2023.
The amendment brings Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers and state-appointed officials under the Lokayukta’s jurisdiction.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated the amendment clarifies issues highlighted by the President’s office.
The change removes ambiguity between the jurisdiction of the Lokayukta and the Lokpal.
The amendment also updates references to repealed Central laws, replacing the Indian Penal Code with the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
