Gauntlet passed: Spider-Man: Brand New Day breaks Endgame's opening record
A new movie called Spider-Man: Brand New Day is playing in theaters.
On its very first weekend, it made a huge amount of money: 360 million dollars.
That is more than any other movie has ever earned on an opening weekend in the United States.
The old record belonged to Avengers: Endgame, which made about 357 million dollars when it opened in 2019.
The directors of that older movie, Joe and Anthony Russo, congratulated the Spider-Man team online.
They shared a drawing of Spider-Man holding glowing stones and a chess piece.
Some fans think the chess piece is a clue that Spider-Man will show up in a future movie called Avengers: Doomsday.
The film stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man, with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon.
The studio expects it to earn more than 2 billion dollars worldwide by its second weekend.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned USD 360 million domestically in its opening weekend, a new US record.
It surpassed the USD 357.1 million debut of Avengers: Endgame, which had held the record since 2019.
Joe and Anthony Russo congratulated the cast and crew on Instagram alongside artwork by illustrator @bosslogic.
The artwork's chess piece sparked fan speculation about Tom Holland's Spider-Man appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, following leaked set photos of Robert Downey Jr.'s Victor Von Doom before a chessboard.
The film is projected to surpass USD 2 billion in worldwide box office during its second weekend in theatres.
