Chennai Resumes 40-Day Household Waste Segregation Campaign

Chennai Resumes 40-Day Household Waste Segregation Campaign

The Greater Chennai Corporation is restarting a programme that teaches families to separate their garbage.

The programme covers 50,000 homes in southern Chennai.

Officials have already given bags and stickers to 45,000 of those homes.

Families are asked to keep four kinds of waste separate.

These are biodegradable, non-biodegradable, sanitary and hazardous waste.

Officials say participation improved from 35 per cent to 64 per cent among homes that received bags.

Sanitation workers visit homes and remind people to follow the system.

Some collection vehicles still do not have special bins for sanitary waste.

Workers also say mixed garbage makes their jobs take longer.

The city will need more money and new contributions to expand the programme.
