UEFA Boycotts FIFA World Cups Over Investor Plan
UEFA, the group that runs European football, said it will not play in any FIFA tournament if FIFA sells part of the World Cup to private investors.
FIFA wants to create a new company that could let investors own a small share.
UEFA thinks this turns the World Cup into a business and wants to keep it for football fans.
The boycott could stop the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil and the 2030 Men’s World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
FIFA says the plan will raise money for football everywhere, but UEFA and other groups say it was announced without enough talk to everyone involved.
UEFA’s 55 members voted to boycott all FIFA competitions if the governing body sells stakes in a new commercial subsidiary.
FIFA plans to create a $20 billion subsidiary (FIFA Forward Enterprise) that would allow private investors to hold up to 20 % of its tournaments.
The boycott would affect the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil and the 2030 Men’s World Cup co‑hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
FIFA says the plan could raise up to $4.2 billion and give each of its 211 member associations a one‑off $20 million payment and higher development funds.
UEFA and other confederations (AFC, CONCACAF, CAF) have criticized the proposal as lacking consultation and risking commercialisation of football.
