Uttam Kumar at 100: Bengal’s Eternal Mahanayak

Uttam Kumar was one of the most loved actors in Bengali cinema.

He was born in 1926 and became known as the Mahanayak, meaning great hero.

His first films did poorly, and people even called him “Flop Master General.”

He kept working and improved his acting through many nights on stage.

His big breakthrough came with Basu Paribar and Sharey Chuattor.

He and Suchitra Sen then became one of Bengali cinema’s most famous romantic pairs.

Uttam Kumar also played villains, troubled people and morally complicated characters.

He worked with filmmaker Satyajit Ray in Nayak and Chiriyakhana.

He received the first National Film Award for Best Actor in 1968 and died in 1980, but remains an important figure in Bengal’s culture.
