UPSC Challenges CAT Order on Bengal DGP Appointment
There's a big argument about who should be the next top police officer in West Bengal, India.
The current acting chief, Rajeev Kumar, is about to retire on January 31.
The West Bengal government sent a list of eight possible new chiefs to a group called the UPSC, but the UPSC said no because the government didn't follow the rules.
The rules say the government should have sent the list three months before the old chief retired.
Now, the UPSC is asking the court to help decide what to do.
The West Bengal government wants Rajeev Kumar to stay a little longer, but the UPSC isn't sure that's allowed.
It's all very complicated!
The UPSC has challenged a CAT order directing the West Bengal government to complete the DGP appointment process by January 31.
The West Bengal government sent a list of eight IPS officers, including Rajeev Kumar, to the UPSC for empanelment.
The UPSC declined the list, citing non-compliance with a 2018 Supreme Court order requiring a three-month notice period.
The state government is seeking an extension for Rajeev Kumar to continue as Acting DGP.
The UPSC advised the West Bengal government to approach the Supreme Court for necessary clearance.
