Government Plans PLI Schemes for EVs and Aircraft
The Indian government is thinking about two big plans to help make more electric vehicles (EVs) and small aircraft.
First, they want to include new EV companies like Ather, River, and Euler in a program that gives money to car makers.
This program, called PLI-Auto, started in 2021 and lasts until 2029.
The new companies weren't included at first because they didn't meet the rules, but now the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) wants to change that.
The government body in charge, the Ministry of Heavy Industries, is asking for opinions from car industry experts.
These new companies have been selling more and more EVs, and the government wants to help them grow.
Second, the government is working on a new program to support making small aircraft in India.
This program, called PLI-Aircraft, will give money to companies that make small planes with fewer than 20 seats.
The planes must have at least 80% parts made in India to get the money.
The program will start in 2026-27 and last for six years.
The government wants to help India make more planes and be less dependent on other countries.
The Adani Group has already signed a deal with Embraer to explore setting up a plane assembly line in India.
The government thinks these programs will help India make more EVs and planes, and create more jobs.
PMO nudges Ministry of Heavy Industries to include EV startups in PLI-Auto scheme.
82 companies are currently shortlisted, but only 18 meet eligibility criteria.
Ather, River, and Euler have lobbied to be included, citing increased sales and eligibility.
Civil aviation ministry plans a ₹12,000 crore to ₹15,000 crore PLI scheme for small aircraft manufacturing.
The PLI-Aircraft scheme will run from FY27 to FY33 and require 80% indigenous content for eligibility.
