India's December 31 Deadline for Revised ITRs
In India, taxpayers have until December 31 of the relevant assessment year to file a revised or belated income tax return (ITR).
This deadline is set by the Income Tax Department under Section 139(5) of the IT Act.
For example, if you need to revise your ITR for the financial year 2024-25, the deadline is December 31, 2025.
After this date, you cannot file a revised or belated ITR, but you can file an 'Updated Return' or apply for condonation of delay.
The Income Tax Department is sending reminders to employees of multinational companies to report undisclosed foreign assets and income by December 31.
Voluntarily correcting mistakes and making full disclosures is the safest option as tax authorities can now easily track overseas assets.
Filing a revised return is important if you have made mistakes such as omitting income, claiming incorrect deductions, or choosing the wrong ITR form.
It's crucial to file your ITR on time to avoid heavy penalties and interest.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has also launched a data-driven 'NUDGE' campaign to encourage taxpayers to review and rectify potentially ineligible deduction claims identified through risk analytics.
Taxpayers are being contacted via SMS and email to rectify discrepancies before the deadline.
