Mizoram Faces HIV Challenge from Rising MSM Numbers
In Mizoram, there is a growing concern about the increasing number of men who have sex with other men (MSM).
This is important because these men are at a higher risk of getting HIV, a serious health issue.
So far, 1,105 MSM are registered and getting help, but officials think the real number is much higher.
Many MSM don't register because they are afraid their identity will be revealed, especially those who are married.
This makes it hard to provide them with treatment.
The good news is that Mizoram is doing well in preventing HIV, with 14 centers providing medicine to those who need it.
However, more than 7,000 people who have HIV still need to start their treatment.
MSACS expresses concern over the rising number of MSM in Mizoram, posing a public health challenge in HIV prevention.
1,105 MSM are registered with MSACS, but the actual number is believed to be much higher due to underreporting.
Sexual transmission is the primary mode of HIV transmission in Mizoram, accounting for 70.04% of cases.
Mizoram ranks third in the country for HIV prevention efforts, with 14 ART centers and 18,231 people currently on treatment.
Over 7,000 HIV-positive individuals in Mizoram have not yet started antiretroviral therapy (ART).
