Police Detain Congress Leaders in Jammu Statehood Protest
On Sunday, the Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir tried to march to the Lt.
Governor’s residence to give a letter to the President asking for the region to have full statehood again.
The police stopped them and took many leaders and supporters into custody.
The protest was led by Tariq Hameed Karra and others.
They had been asking for statehood for almost two years.
The Congress party plans to keep protesting and is thinking about a big march from one part of Kashmir to another.
Another party, the National Conference, is also planning a protest in New Delhi for the same reason.
The Congress leaders said the people voted in the elections believing the Prime Minister’s promise that statehood would be restored, but it hasn’t happened yet.
They also said the BJP’s protest in Srinagar seems like an attempt to disrupt their protest in Delhi.
Police detained Congress leaders and activists attempting to march to Lok Bhavan in Jammu to submit a memorandum demanding statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
The protest was led by Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra and other senior party members.
Congress activists held a peaceful sit-in at Maharaja Hari Singh Park before attempting to march towards the Lok Bhavan, where police erected barricades and razor wire.
The memorandum was intended to be submitted to the President of India through the Lt. Governor's office.
The Congress party plans to intensify its agitation with more district-level programs and is considering a long march from Lakhanpur to Lolab in north Kashmir.
