Goyal Urges WTO-Compliant Responses to G20 Trade Distortions
Piyush Goyal represented India at a G20 meeting about world trade.
He said government support and hidden subsidies can make some products unfairly cheap.
This may hurt businesses in other countries through dumping or predatory pricing.
Goyal said countries should respond using tools allowed by World Trade Organization rules.
He said these actions should rely on evidence and be open to court review.
He supported changing supply chains, but said this should not be used to avoid trade rules or hurt developing countries.
He also defended equal trade treatment, agreement-based decisions and special support for developing economies.
On forced labour, he said border restrictions should use specific evidence rather than assumptions about whole countries or industries.
Goyal also supported restoring the WTO’s two-level dispute settlement system.
Piyush Goyal urged G20 members to address trade distortions through WTO-compliant measures.
He supported evidence-based anti-dumping and countervailing duties subject to judicial review.
Goyal said supply-chain diversification must not justify measures outside WTO rules or burden developing countries.
He defended MFN treatment, consensus-based WTO decisions and special treatment for developing economies.
He called for evidence-based forced-labour border measures and restoration of the WTO’s two-tier dispute settlement system.
