Canada Suspends US Trade Talks as 50% Tariffs Begin

The United States and Canada were trying to make a new trade agreement.

Their talks broke down after the United States made last-minute demands.

The United States then placed a 50% tax on about $28 billion worth of Canadian imports.

Canada said the demands were unfair and stopped sending negotiators to the talks.

Canada plans to place equally large tariffs on American goods.

The two countries disagree about who caused the negotiations to fail.

The United States says Canada changed its promises and asked for more.

Canada says it is building stronger trade relationships with other countries instead of depending so heavily on the United States.
