India Allows Duty-Free Sugar Imports as Prices Surge

India Allows Duty-Free Sugar Imports as Prices Surge

Sugar has become much more expensive in India.

Prices rose by nearly 40% in two months.

People usually buy more sugar during the festive season.

The government is worried that supplies may not be enough.

It will therefore allow 1 million metric tonnes of sugar to enter India without import taxes.

This could increase the amount of sugar available in shops.

More supply may help bring prices down.

India is both one of the biggest sugar producers and the world’s biggest sugar consumer.
