Dr. Lalitha Regi and Dr. Regi George Receive 2025 Paul Farmer Award for Global Health Equity
Imagine two doctors, Dr. Lalitha Regi and Dr. Regi George, who decided to help people living far away from big cities in a place called Sittilingi Valley.
When they first went there in 1993, many babies were getting sick and dying, and mothers often didn't survive childbirth.
The doctors worked with the people there, building a small clinic that grew into a hospital.
They also helped the villagers learn to grow healthy food without harmful chemicals and start businesses that help women make beautiful crafts.
Because of their hard work and kindness, fewer babies are dying, mothers are safer, and the whole community is healthier and happier.
Now, McGill University in Canada has given them a special award called the Paul Farmer Award for Global Health Equity to honor their amazing work helping the poor and making sure everyone has a chance to be healthy.
Dr. Lalitha Regi and Dr. Regi George were named co-recipients of the 2025 Paul Farmer Award for Global Health Equity by McGill University.
They have worked in Sittilingi Valley, Tamil Nadu, since 1993, transforming health indicators by reducing infant mortality and eliminating maternal deaths.
Beyond healthcare, they supported organic, millet-based agriculture and co-founded the Sittilingi Organic Farmers Association.
They also established enterprises like the Porgai Artisans Association and Vanavil to empower women and preserve local traditions.
The award recognizes their commitment to health equity and social justice, embodying Dr. Paul Farmer's vision of serving marginalized communities.
