Onion Prices Rise as Farmers Blame Shortages and Hoarding

Onion prices have become much higher in many parts of India.

Sellers in Maharashtra say fewer onions are reaching markets.

They blame possible hoarding by middlemen, spoiled stock and a delay in the new crop.

The delay was linked to a gap in the monsoon.

Higher diesel prices have also made transportation more expensive.

Because onions cost more, some customers are buying fewer of them.

Farmers and sellers say this is hurting their incomes.

The ruling NDA says prices should return to normal soon.

Opposition leaders say the government must act quickly to help ordinary families.
