World food prices dip in December 2025
The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that world food prices went down in December 2025.
This was the fourth month in a row that prices dropped.
The decrease was mainly because of lower prices for dairy, meat, and vegetable oils.
However, when looking at the whole year of 2025, food prices were actually higher than in 2024.
This is because some foods like vegetable oils and dairy products were more expensive.
For example, dairy prices were 13.2% higher in 2025 compared to 2024.
Meat prices also went up by 5.1%.
On the other hand, cereal and sugar prices were lower in 2025.
The FAO tracks these prices to understand how much it costs to buy food around the world.
World food prices declined in December 2025 for the fourth consecutive month, driven by lower dairy, meat, and vegetable oil prices.
The FAO Food Price Index averaged 124.3 points in December 2025, down from 125.1 in November 2025.
For the full year 2025, the index averaged 127.2 points, up 4.3% from 2024, due to higher prices for vegetable oils and dairy products.
Dairy prices in 2025 were 13.2% higher than in 2024, while meat prices increased by 5.1% and vegetable oil prices by 17.1%.
Cereal prices in 2025 were 4.9% lower than in 2024, marking the third consecutive annual decline, and sugar prices were down 17%.
