Iran Nuclear Impasse Deepens After U.S. Wins IAEA Vote

The IAEA is an organization that checks whether countries are using nuclear materials safely.

Its board approved a resolution criticizing Iran and sending its nuclear case to the United Nations Security Council.

The vote passed with 23 of 35 members supporting it.

The United States and the European Union supported the resolution.

China, Russia, and Iran said the vote was not legally justified or could make the issue too political.

The resolution asks Iran to cooperate with inspectors and explain what happened to its nuclear materials.

Iran says its cooperation stopped because of the damage caused by war and regional attacks.

Iranian officials worry that the decision could be used to justify more strikes on nuclear sites.

The IAEA says it still lacks information and access needed to assess Iran’s activities.
